Drop Dead Diva

I decided to talk about a show that is a little different than the others that I’ve been talking about. Drop Dead Diva, according to Netflix, is about “Superficial, stick-thin hottie Deb Dobkins catches her bit of karma in this comedy series when she dies and returns to earth in the body of smart, plus-sized attorney Jane Bingum — just the type she dismissed in her previous life. But as the ‘new’ Jane learns to exercise her mental and legal prowess, she discovers that the joys of a sharp mind and a compassionate soul outweigh the advantages of a svelte body.”While this show is funny, cute, and a little cheesy at times, I think it shows something very interesting. When Deb was herself, she was going out with a guy who believed they were soul mates. Now, that same boyfriend works with Jane (Jane on the outside, Deb on the inside) and is friends with her. The thing is, if he believed that Deb was his soul mate then he should notice that Jane, even though not an aspiring model, has the exact same personality as Deb. I understand that if they got together right away then the show wouldn’t have any of that drama but still. She’s just a smarter version of Deb, she’s even quoted herself. So what I guess is being said here is that because Jane is plus sized, Grayson (the boyfriend) won’t even pay attention to her as more of a friend.
Jane Deb
There are a few episodes that focus on the fact that Jane is plus sized. She’s upset when a women gets fired for gainin weight and another one where a store doesn’t carry over a certain size. In one episode they show how Deb would get free drinks from bartenders, special treatment, etc. and Jane has to pay, gets ignored, etc. There are a few more, I think, but those are the ones that stick out. I understand that the show is trying to show Deb what it’s like to be the total opposite of what she was but it bothers me. I guess it bothers me because of the fact that her weight shouldn’t be an issue if she’s pretty, smart, funny, good at her job, a good friend, etc. That’s the show’s whole premise though, show an aspiring model what it’s like to be a plus sized lawyer. For a while Jane tried to lose weight but she gave up on that. I was happy when she stopped trying to lose weight because the whole point of the show is teaching Deb a lesson. When Deb starts to change and also understand Jane’s life, it’s nice that she appriciates what people that don’t look like models have to go through. It’s a great show and very funny. It’s worth checking out. What the show says about society and how we treat on kind of person over the other is also very interesting.
Thanks for reading! I know it’s kind of short but it’s finals week and I need to go study! Comment, follow, like, follow me on twitter: lydiamariie
